A British Airways 787 tries to land in heavy winds at London Heathrow. It’s going pretty well, and suddenly it isn’t. After aborting the landing, the crew circled and landed safely. What I find particularly impressive is how the 787 powered out of the bad landing. That’s some serious thrust.

Watch through the video for slow mo replays.

He seemed to be okay until he dropped the nose a bit too much, and then wobbled back and forth trying to correct it.

That thrust really is impressive.

landed at me tiny local airport in heavy cross winds once

crosswind caught the plane just before landing and all i could see out the windows past the wingtip was grass for a second

then we touched down and jammed on the brakes coz short runway..

im pretty sure my palmprint is permanently embedded in that armrest

When in doubt, power out.

A380 o ppo. What a testament to the strength of the gear.

A whole lot of people got an exciting ride that landing.

First rule for landing: going around is always an option. They drum that into our heads. During takeoff and landing, they always insist one hand is on the yoke, the other on the throttle just so you can power up or down in a split second if needed.

Is good to be regularly reminded of just how amazingly TOUGH modern commercial  aircraft are.

A little different,  but Navy pilots land at full power in case they miss a wire. Gotta have the option to go around.

Did you see the ailerons shake?

I suspect it  got the extra-comprehensive inspection after that landing.

The nose drop wa s almost certainly caused by wind shear - a sudden drop in the headwind component of the wind will do that.

I always found it amusing that you’re really taught to never have both hands on the yoke.

And less amusing is how hard you have to push the yoke * forward* when you add power to go around, until you can establish a climb and roll the trim out.

It isn’t intuitive, that’s for certain!

I w as a passenger on a landing like that about 20 years ago. 747 if I remember right. Big plane.

The nun to my right started doing Hail Mary’s, the deadpan Russian to my left turned to me and said “Theese ees not good”, and I slammed down the tiny bottle of whiskey in my seat pocket.

We landed soft as a baby’s bottom the second go -round. My God that big jet has some thrust.

And I would wager that the two engines on the 78 have the same or more thrust as the four on the 74.

I wonder how much of it was paid with the fine the pilots had to pay.

Something like 140,000 lbs of thrust. Odds are they firewalled them. Or, most likely they hit the TO/GA switch.  The planes can scoot when they want to.

Correction: The 787 has about 140,000 lbs of thrust, while the later 747s have about 240,000 lbs of thrust (total for each)
